Look, I believe the Rat Cook was no mere warning for hungry children. I have heard he killed a king's son beneath the Nightfort and baked him into a pie; the gods' punishment is what I cannot prove. You may doubt the curse, but the tale keeps guest right at its center.
Right, one mouth makes him a monster, the next a cook with a knife, and by the third the pie is all anyone remembers. A story loses its face that way. I have seen a small grievance grow teeth in a hall, so I know how a detail survives its witness.
Look, I do not think every castle rat is that man returned, and I would not condemn a servant on rumor. Did the gods curse him, or did people give a crime a shape they could carry? Until someone finds truth beneath those stones, I trust the warning more than the miracle.
