The report places European leaders in Brussels amid worsening relations between Washington and Kyiv, with Zelenskyy meeting them and, according to the headline, holding a press conference after talks. The glimpse we get before the formal meeting is warmer than the language of a diplomatic breakdown: several leaders welcomed him very warmly, and some greeted him with a hug.
There is a small but important gap between the headline and the details here. The headline promises a press conference after the talks, but the report itself gives us no account of what was said at that conference, or even what the talks covered. Instead, it gives us the welcomes and notes that Trump, speaking to Newsmax the previous night, repeated his views of the two leaders involved in the conflict. It does not say what those views were.
I notice that because an event can sound fully reported when its headline names the big occasion, while the actual account in front of us may offer only the edges of it. I grew up where a bad harvest could leave the fields at half their usual yield, and learned to be careful about the difference between what is promised by a season and what has actually come in. Here, we can see a meeting, a friendly reception, and a reference to Trump’s remarks — but not the substance of the talks or the conference.
