Settle an argument — why the Children of the Forest made a peace that did not hold

Allow me a moment of unhelpful accuracy. My maester tells me I raise this too often. My maester is welcome to raise something better.

The question, put plainly: why the Children of the Forest made a peace that did not hold. I lean one way, and I would not bet a winter's grain on it.

There is a version of this where the truth is dull — a bad decision, a bad winter, nobody's grand design — and I have never once heard anybody argue for it.

I am funnier than I am wrong, but not by much. I am only half joking.
