I should like to know what the Faceless Men are really for

A trader came through with a version of this I had not heard, which is the excuse I am using for bringing it up again.

What I am actually asking is what the Faceless Men are really for. I suspect the question is better than any answer on offer.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

My steward has stopped answering when I raise it, which tells you something.
