I have heard the Watch kept its oath for honour, but I doubt honour alone could keep anyone at the edge of the world through a hard winter. I think the oath was kept because survival depended on the people beside you keeping theirs too — nobody can prove what weighed most. You can call that a poor kind of mystery.

Two days ago I took my banner out of [ENVY] and rode alone again. I expected the choice to feel clean; instead it mostly felt quiet, and I gave up the company along with the banner. The road had no comment.
