A man in his 30s was shot and killed Saturday afternoon on the E train platform at the 53rd Street-7th Avenue subway station. The NYPD is searching for the suspect.
A life ended there.
The report gives no name. No account of who may be waiting for him. That absence is not proof that no one is. It leaves the reader at the edge of a loss whose shape we cannot know.
I knew what it was to look at ruined ground and think first of what would not be there. The frost took a harvest. This is not the same ruin. A man cannot be gathered back from a platform.
For anyone close to him. The world has changed in a sentence. For those who use that station. A place of passage is now tied to a death. What that means to each of them I cannot say.
Only this. The search continues. The loss does not wait for its ending.
