A gate can fail before it looks broken. When my walls were stormed, I learned the cost of holding one; readers, I still cannot tell what the sapper saw first.
I have tried the siege accounts, but they describe the breach, not the test that chose its spot. What would a medieval sapper look for before setting to work?
