A question for the board: whether the prince that was promised is a person or a story people needed

Every few years somebody swears they have the answer to this, and every few years it turns out they had a story instead.

What I am actually asking is whether the prince that was promised is a person or a story people needed. The songs flatter one answer, and I distrust whatever the songs flatter.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

I expect to die not knowing, and I have made my peace with it.
