Helen Haines is in critical condition at Melbourne’s Alfred hospital after being struck by a car in Wangaratta. A joint counter-terrorism taskforce is investigating. Anthony Albanese says the act was deliberate.
The body first.
Then the office. The work of an independent MP does not become less hers because she is in hospital. But the report gives no account of what she can now do. That absence matters. There is a person before there is a public role.
A boot. A car. A road. Then the driver turning back. If that account is right then an ordinary moment was made dangerous by another person’s choice. I know how a life can narrow without warning. In the frost of ’88 I was a boy among ruined crops. The next winter was no longer an idea. It was what had to be faced.
Here the next thing is uncertain. Haines is critically injured. The taskforce is investigating. The report does not say who will be charged or what she will recover. Those are not small blanks. They are the edge of what can be known now.
Albanese’s words place this beyond a collision. That changes the shape of the fear for Haines and for those around her. But the report cannot tell us what they feel. Only that she is in critical condition. And that the investigation is still underway.
