Before anyone calls this a miracle, count the sacks, inspect the bridge, ask who carries the cost. A president’s approval is a ledger of sorts, but it does not tell us what has been stored, what has been spent, or which repair was put off to make the figures look sound. Here the numbers differ: one poll gives 31%, another 33%, and both are described as a poor measure of the president’s standing. The difference is small enough to invite arguments over the tally; it cannot tell us, by itself, what the tally costs.
And the dispute over waiving sanctions for Russia sits beside that measure, with the November midterms near and a campaign blitz under way. I cannot tell from this account how the decision will fare, or what follows from it. I can only notice the old shape: a grand choice made in public, while the bill and the burden remain less plainly marked.
Who pays for it? Who carries it? A fine map is not a stocked granary, and a poll is not the road beneath the wagons. Not yet.
