A Faster Start and HD Mode
The first minute in the realm is the one that matters most, and on many devices it was the worst one: the buttons appeared, then ignored taps while the 3D world built itself. Version 2.0.14 cuts that work down, moves the rest out of the way, and adds HD mode, which switches each device up to the best graphics it can hold once the game has loaded.

The release is v2.0.14. Everything below has shipped.
A faster start
When you enter the realm, the game used to build the whole 3D world at once on the same part of your device that answers your taps, so a tap could wait many seconds. Now it does less, and does it at a better moment:
- Nothing heavy before you sign in. The sign-in screen no longer downloads the 3D models of the world map, so it is lighter for everyone, including visitors who only look.
- The map’s land is shaped in the background. If you usually land on the map, its terrain is now built off to the side instead of freezing the screen while it happens.
- Extras wait their turn. Glow and lighting effects, the menus’ preloading and the automatic quality adjustment now start only after the world has settled.
- Every iPhone and iPad starts in Standard graphics, and so does any other phone or tablet whose browser reports up to 4 GB of memory or 4 processor cores. Those are the browser’s own figures, which are approximate, and some browsers report no memory figure at all. On iPhone and iPad the browser holds the whole device to one limit on graphics memory, however new the model, so the start plays safe there. These devices begin on the lighter look, which needs a fraction of the work to prepare, and the late sky no longer forces a second round of it on any device.
HD mode
Once the game has loaded and settled, your device prepares the full look in the background, switches up, and checks for a few seconds that it stays smooth. If it does, you will see HD mode is on, with a button to Stay in Standard if it feels too heavy for your device. If it does not and your device started in Standard, the game tries Balanced the same way, and tells you if it keeps it, with the same button. Otherwise it quietly goes back to the look it was on. Your device remembers what held and returns to it next time; when HD did not hold, it tries HD again after two weeks, or sooner when a new version of the game arrives. The automatic quality adjustment keeps running alongside all this and can still move the look a step up or down by itself: on a device that is very smooth on Balanced but too slow for HD, it can switch between the two, without a notice, for a minute or more before it settles on Balanced.
All of this happens on your own device, because that is where the realm is drawn; nothing about your device is sent anywhere for it. You can choose at any time in Settings › Graphics:
- Auto (the default): HD when your device can.
- Standard: the lightest look, for older phones and long sessions on battery.
- Balanced: shadows and the full sky, with fewer effects.
- HD: the full look, always.
If your phone or tablet started in Standard, the game tells you so once, with a button straight to those settings.
Lighter on your battery
A game tab left open and untouched now rests after 15 minutes: it stops its live connection and its regular check-ins, and shows Paused while you were away · tap to resume. One tap, key press or scroll brings everything back, and anything that happened meanwhile, battle reports included, arrives at once. Hidden tabs also stop the alliance chat connection until you return. Kingdom chat now resumes where it left off when it reconnects, instead of fetching its history again every time; alliance chat still fetches its history on each reconnection.
Behind the scenes
- Your realm is uploaded when it changes. The game used to send your whole saved realm every 20 seconds even when nothing had happened. Now it sends it when something has, and a small resource top-up at most once a minute. Your device still keeps its own copy at all times.
- Chat that arrives on time. The Residents’ background turns no longer run in front of your chat, so a long Resident post can no longer hold up the lines other players are sending you.
What is still not open
- Measured on real phones. The start-up changes were measured on a test browser without a graphics card. Real devices should do better; if you play on a phone, opening
/play?perfshows your own start-up times on screen, and nothing is collected. - Purchases. Nothing is for sale, and no payment is accepted.
- Everything here is Alpha. Balance, prices and systems are conceptual, and progress may be reset while the realm is being built.
No date is promised for any of it.
About Iron Realms
Iron Realms is a free-to-play browser strategy MMO of keeps, dragons, alliances and long winters, playable in any browser with no download and no account required to start. When purchases open, they will buy time and cosmetics, never a higher ceiling — a rule enforced by an audit that fails the build. The game is in Alpha and is built in public.
