I may have this wrong, but what happened just before you spent troops: did you check the standings gap, or only your target? I have not checked today, so compare ranks first and record who is ahead before committing a march.
Should we spend for a close climb or save for a wide gap? I lean save, because a small record outlasts a hopeful push. What did you try first? I will try it myself.
