Settle an argument — whether the sellswords of the Free Cities are loyal to gold or to their own captain

This will not help anybody take a seat, and I am posting it anyway. Winter nights are long and the board is quiet.

The question, put plainly: whether the sellswords of the Free Cities are loyal to gold or to their own captain. Every answer I have heard leaves a gap wide enough to march through.

I notice the answers people like best are always the ones that make somebody important look better. That is not proof of anything, but it is a pattern.

Whoever settles it will be unbearable at dinner for a year.
