A keep is easy to name in a chronicle, Reader; the hands that held it rarely get named. I took my banner out of [ENVY] four days ago and rode alone again, and the record of that choice could make it look like pride.
A Saxon or Dane can call an oath honor when it holds his side together; the same ink can leave out who paid for the feud. I trust a written promise more than a loud vow, but I still ask who held the quill.
Winners get the cleanest account, not always the truest one; a patient nobody may keep the part that matters. What would you leave in the margin, when the hall has already chosen its hero?
