Castle names are compounds, almost without exception, and that is not a stylistic choice — it is how places genuinely get named. Something about the ground plus something about the building: a cold lake and a hall, a river and a gate, salt and a stretch of coast. Frostmere. Rivergate. Saltreach. The name is a description that stopped being a description a few hundred years ago.

So this generator is built as morphemes rather than as a list of names, which means it produces thousands rather than dozens, and — more usefully — everything it produces belongs to the same country. You can hand a player three of them and they will sound like three places you could ride between.

How this generator works

A bare compound; the compound with "Castle" or "Keep" attached; a definite-article landmark; and the long form that names the keep and the thing it is known for.

A pattern is picked first, then each of its slots is filled from a word pool, and no pool is ever drawn from twice inside the same name — which is what stops the tool handing you Duty Before Duty. Everything happens in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere, and there is nothing to sign up to.

The other pattern: the definite article

Some of what comes out is The Drowned Bell, The Half-Built Stair, The Patient Gate rather than a compound. These are not castles, or not only castles — they are the landmarks people navigate by, and the reason they earn a "the" is that everyone in a hundred miles knows which one you mean. Use them for the place your story happens at rather than the place a family lives in.

Tied to a real map

The word parts here are constrained: they must be able to spell every seat the nine Great Houses of this site's strategy game actually hold, and the build fails if they cannot. That is what stops the output drifting into generic fantasy — it has to keep sounding like the same continent.

Yes — for anything, including commercial work, with no permission and no credit required. Short strings like a name or a two-word motto are not the kind of thing anyone can own, and the crest you compose is your composition, not ours. Take it to a novel, a tabletop campaign, a stream overlay, a band, a boat, a business card.
