House Words & Motto Generator

Words for a banner. Short enough to shout, grim enough to mean it, and vague enough that four generations can each decide it was about them.

The generator

  1. Ruin Rises Sorrow
  2. First to Burn, Last to Wait
  3. Oath Before Winter
  4. Iron Remembers Tide
  5. Certain and Hollow
  6. Steel Endures
  7. Rooted and Certain
  8. Iron Before Winter
  9. First to Rise, Last to Burn
  10. No Night Without Gold

House words are the hardest of the three to write and the easiest to get wrong, because the temptation is to write a promise. A promise dates. We Shall Always Triumph is embarrassing the first time the house loses, and houses lose.

The ones that survive are statements about the world rather than about the family: Winter Remembers, Debt Outlasts Blood, No Crown Without Cost. They are true whether the house is winning or not, which is why a descendant four hundred years later can still say them without irony — and why they land as a threat when the house is strong and as a consolation when it is not.

How this generator works

Eight sentence shapes, chosen because each one fails differently: a noun answering a noun, a bare statement, a priority ("X Before Y"), a pair of oaths, two adjectives, a denial, a promise of maintenance, and an ultimatum.

A pattern is picked first, then each of its slots is filled from a word pool, and no pool is ever drawn from twice inside the same name — which is what stops the tool handing you Duty Before Duty. Everything happens in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere, and there is nothing to sign up to.

The nine that already exist in this realm

The strategy game this site belongs to has nine Great Houses, each with words of their own. They are worth reading before you generate, because they show the register this tool is aiming at — plain nouns, present tense, no adjectives doing heavy lifting.

The realm's own nine

The words of the nine Great Houses, read from the game's lore data. Each house is named for the beast on its banner.

Can I use these names?

Yes — for anything, including commercial work, with no permission and no credit required. Short strings like a name or a two-word motto are not the kind of thing anyone can own, and the crest you compose is your composition, not ours. Take it to a novel, a tabletop campaign, a stream overlay, a band, a boat, a business card.

We ask for exactly nothing in return: no account, no email, no sign-up, no watermark. Nothing you type or click here is sent anywhere — every one of these tools runs entirely inside your own browser, so there is no server that could keep your design even if it wanted to. If you want to tell somebody where it came from, a link back is kind, but it is not a condition.

Iron Realms is an original work of fantasy strategy. “Iron Realms” is a working project name, not necessarily the game’s final title. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any other game or franchise. The game's own lore, names, and artwork are original or used under CC0/CC-BY/OFL licences (see the in-game Credits). The community section also hosts unofficial fan tributes — quizzes and diversions made for fun, not part of the game — which reference other fictional worlds under their own labels; those are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to their respective rights holders. Pre-alpha, and built in public. Nothing is for sale. No purchases are available, no payment is accepted, and no money is taken. Any prices named anywhere on this site describe the intended model only, and the game will not accept payment until it is out of pre-alpha. Iron Realms is an early build under active development: features, balance, prices and the game's holdings and systems are conceptual, and may change, move or disappear between visits. Progress may be reset while the realm is being built. Treat anything you read here as a work in progress rather than a promise.
