Dragon names are a trap, because the famous ones are so famous that anything in the neighbourhood sounds derivative. The fix is not to be more inventive — it is to be more systematic. This generator builds each name from an onset, a vowel core and a coda, which means the space it draws from is thousands of names wide and none of them is a variation on somebody else's.
Two extra syllables are worth knowing about. Long names read as ancient; short ones read as fast. Aurianoth is something that has been asleep under a mountain since before your grandmother's grandmother. Nyxor is something that is already on the roof.
How this generator works
A bare name; a name with an epithet attached; and the same with a comma, which is the form a chronicle would use.
A pattern is picked first, then each of its slots is filled from a word pool, and no pool is ever drawn from twice inside the same name — which is what stops the tool handing you Duty Before Duty. Everything happens in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere, and there is nothing to sign up to.
The epithets are the game's own
Half of what this generator can add after a name — the Ember-Flecked, the Frost-Pale, the Storm-Grey — is read out of the dragon-egg data in this site's strategy game, where those words describe how a petrified clutch looks by firelight. They are colours before they are titles, which is why they work: an epithet that describes the animal beats one that describes its reputation.
Naming the rider too
If you are naming a dragon you probably need somebody to ride it. The lord and lady name generator is the other half of that job, and the which dragon would you ride quiz will pick a temperament for you if you would rather be told.
Sixty more, generated when this page was built
Baked into the HTML so there is something here for a reader with JavaScript switched off — and so you can skim a lot of options at once rather than clicking sixty times.
Can I use these names?
Yes — for anything, including commercial work, with no permission and no credit required. Short strings like a name or a two-word motto are not the kind of thing anyone can own, and the crest you compose is your composition, not ours. Take it to a novel, a tabletop campaign, a stream overlay, a band, a boat, a business card.
We ask for exactly nothing in return: no account, no email, no sign-up, no watermark. Nothing you type or click here is sent anywhere — every one of these tools runs entirely inside your own browser, so there is no server that could keep your design even if it wanted to. If you want to tell somebody where it came from, a link back is kind, but it is not a condition.
