The Walking Septon

A septon on the road with bleeding feet and a wax-sealed letter he must deliver 'before the moon turns'. He will not say to whom.

Every choice, and exactly what it pays

The odds words are contracts, not atmosphere: safe is 85%, even is 55%, risky is 32%, and every one of those numbers is fixed and tested. Fortune then bends the roll by +4% per point, clamped at ±3 points, so a good early call buys slack later and two disasters make the rest of the road meaner. Nothing here is ever certain: the check is clamped to the 5%–95% band whatever your fortune.

What the chronicle records

Carry him and his letter (safe, 85%)

Success: The seal, it turns out, belongs to a grateful and wealthy house. Their steward is generous and their kitchens better. → Food +50, Renown +3, Fortune +1

Failure: The house has fallen on times so hard they borrow YOUR candles. The septon's blessing is sincere, at least. → Food -20, Renown +1

Steam the seal first (risky, 32%)

Success: A warning of a grain levy, two weeks early. You buy before the price triples and feel only slightly damned. → Food +180, Renown -1, Fortune -1

Failure: The septon catches you at it. His sermon follows you for a mile and his story travels farther. → Renown -3, Fortune -1

Give him boots and go your way (safe, 85%)

Success: He names your party in his prayers at every sept for a month. It adds up. → Renown +2, Fortune +1

Failure: The boots don't fit. He is gracious about it, which is somehow worse. → nothing gained, nothing lost

Every figure above is generated from the shipped game code — the same constants and formulas the running game uses — and regenerated whenever the balance changes. Nothing on this page is hand-typed.
